Secure Yourself
This guide will help you secure your system, all applications and products here are usable and are free
Also, You don't need to worry about your phone as both Android and iOS have virtualization technology which makes it incredibly hard to hack. Still, an Adblocker for Browser Security has been provided
Note: Everything here is completely suggested based on my opinion and experience and is not being promoted by any party
Host File Reset: If you are unable to reach Antivirus/Malware Scanner websites,it may be that malware has modified your "Host" file, preventing you from reaching these sites.
You can try and reset it by using Microsoft's official Guide.
I) Phone Security:
1) Adblocker(System Wide):
As mentioned before, Android boasts superior security models, and Google Play Protect enhances this by scanning all apps on the Play Store(see here), as well as APK files. AdGuard, which is not available on the Play Store, prioritizes user privacy and is safe to use. It also offers a feature to block ads on YouTube for phones. For iOS devices, AdGuard can be downloaded from the App Store. Visit the official website for instructions on downloading the APK on Android.
II) PC Security:
1) Antivirus(Use one only):
- Defender UI (Use Recommended profile)
- Bitdefender Free
Alright, here's the breakdown: use Defender UI to keep your system close to its default state, opt for Bitdefender Free if you prefer a more aggressive antivirus and don't mind slightly higher resource usage.
2) Web browser security (Use one only):
- uBlock Origin (MV-2) (Firefox-Based Browsers and Brave and Vivaldi only)
- uBlock Origin Lite (MV-3) (Chrome-Edge-Opera-Arc etc)
- Malwarebytes Browser Guard (MV-3) (Available for all browsers)
uBlock Origin is a Manifest V2 extension not supported by Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Arc (unlike Firefox, Brave, and Vivaldi which do support it), necessitating the use of uBlock Origin Lite as an alternative. Malwarebytes Browser Guard is another viable option; it currently supports MV-3, so there are no concerns in that regard.
3) Password Security:
You might wonder why you should use a separate password manager when browsers already offer one. Here are some reasons: 1) Bitwarden is multi-device, open-source, and free, with a paid option available, yet it's still excellent even without the premium features. 2) Browsers often store passwords in plain text files, which are easily accessible to thieves, while Bitwarden encrypts your data, keeping your passwords secure as long as your vault is locked (unless your account is compromised, but following all security steps and avoiding suspicious websites should prevent this). 3) It allows you to check if any of your passwords have been compromised.
4) 2 Factor Authentication/Multi Factor Authentication:
Utilizing an Authenticator app means that even if someone obtains your email and password, they would still require access to your Authenticator app, which is secured on your phone. This is quite challenging to hack, provided you don't sideload apps from sources other than the Play Store or App Store.
5) Apps Updaters (optional but recommended, Install one only):
Updating your apps ensures that any existing vulnerabilities are addressed. An app manager can streamline this process by checking and updating all apps simultaneously with ease.
6) Email Security Checkers:
- F-Secure Data Checker (Emails you the results)
- HaveIBeenPwned
These websites assist you in checking your email for leaks, allowing you to take measures like changing your email if necessary.
7) Extra Utilities:
- Virustotal (Online File and Website scanner)
- NextDNS (DNS-Level Protection)
- Cloudflare Warp (DNS-Level Protection with VPN like features)
- Disabling Powershell 2.0 (Windows)(OLD version of Powershell that is only used by hackers today,especially ransomware)
Virustotal(650 MB file upload limit) allows you to get an assessment of whether a file/website is safe. On the other hand, NextDNS provides you with DNS-level blocking, Cloudflare Warp does what NextDNS does with additional VPN like functions(without a speed and bandwidth cap) but it has lesser additional control features compared to NextDNS. PowerShell 2.0 is an extremely outdated version of PowerShell that is no longer used by legit apps and only malware developers use it, hence why it is recommended to disable it.
